After Bonpland returned from the expedition to South America with Humbolt, he obtained a position as botanist to the Empress Joséphine. Many exotic plants were then imported to //chateau de la Malmaison// and //chateau de Navarre// (Close to //Évreux//). In 1813, together with  Pierre-Joseph Redouté, he published this series of 64 plates, of which 2 represent cacti and 1 a cotyledon.
