This shows how some of the blooms on the Crassula ovata (Jade) froze (center of the Jade with blooms against the blue Pilosocereus), and most of them did not.



This is a Jade that mostly froze, except for the side nearest the window.


This shows a begonia that froze one side, but the Rhipsalis was unaffected.

Micranthus, always cute when they bloom.


Some Mammillarias from seed. These all come from the same fruit, but the characteristics vary wildly. I originally grew a dozen plants, then kept these 4 because of their diversity. The little one hasn't grown much, maybe it is time to separate them.


Crassula mucosa. This one has tiny blooms and they smell like decaying cloth. After bloom, they fall apart and even a tiny piece 1cm long will root and grow.


Mammillaria hahniana. This one blooms most of the year, with a bigger group of flowers in the spring.


Senecio bloom. Many succulent Senecios bloom in the winter, usually in yellow.


This is the bud on Aloe braanddraiensis.


Aloe afinis.


A. immaculata.


One more, one of my favorites, Aloe praetoriensis.


There are more, but this is more than enough.

These are the fruit still hanging on to the one cactus native to Pennsylvania. Opuntia humifisa. This plant lives through the winters when the temps get to -25C. It also lives through the 100 to 125 cm of rain we get here. The fruit are also good to eat until the spring when they turn black and fall off.

Being a newcomer on this forum, I thought it first would be nice to give a quick presentation of myself...
My name is J. Crossley, and I live in France in Limoges where I teach English at University.
I started an interest in succulent plants about 10 years back, but moving around from country to country has caused me to leave many of myplants behind... sadly.
However, I have at last been able to start a new collection, although, as always, I am never sure of the exact names of the plants I have now at home...

I once had a large collection of cacti, but due to professional reasons had to leave it with my parents, who unfortunately did not know how to cultivate these plants (and ignored my advice...) and most of them sadly perished over the years.

In a desperate attempt to save the last remains of my once vast collection, I have recently recuperated the last 8 specimen, stripped them off most soil and roots, extensively washed them, treated them with dimethoate against bugs (lots of mealybugs and probably many more) and (after appropriate time of rest to let wounds dry) potted them in new soil on a south-ward oriented window here in Paris :

The plants now receive direct sun from noon till late evening, though days are still a bit cold and moist (not best conditions I know but hopefully soon to change - May in Paris is usually quite sunny and warm already; also this will prevent them from burning, I did not want to use shading).

Now these plants did not only have bugs, but also ugly colorations and corky parts, most probably caused by fungi and/or diseases, probably caused in part also by the bug attack and too wet conditions over the last years (I think the principal reason my collection perished was bad ventilation).

It has been long since I have dealt with these things, and it would probably be easier to dispose of some of these plants alltogether, but for sentimental reasons (some are more than 15 years old and grown out of seeds by myself) I want to try to save them all. I'd greatly appreciate your help with this!

I would be most grateful for any indication as to appropriate products to use (names of ingredients rather than brandnames please, as these probably differ here in France), procedures, etc.

All spots and colorations are dry and solid, no wetness and/or softness and no bad smell.

The Neobuxbaumia on the left is most attained, it has started to develop black rot(?) from top down.

Some bloom almost all year, and some I had never expected to bloom, like my A. plicatilis. What a surprise to see a flower stalk on such a small plant of only one fan.

J'appelle les fleurs de mon Fero. latispinus les dernieres de l'automne, mais mes 'fleurs d'hiver ' sont deja ouvertes. Avec les temps. frais, les nuits vers 10C, les fleurs duront encore un mois. Les fleurs d'hiver sont les Aloes, Rhipsalis et al.

Ca c'est A. krapohliana. Il y a 2 hampes totale.

antes de navidad fuimos nuevamente al valle de Botija. esta vez queríamos acampar en el "peak", no sólo ir por un par de horas.
Florencia manejó desde Santiago hasta el Norte de Paposo (¡más de 1.000 km!) en casi horas. el 22 de diciembre acampamos entre las Copiapoa cinerea ssp. haseltoniana.
a la mañana siguiente llegamos a Botija y preparamos el equipaje:
1 carpa
1 saco de dormir
1,5 litro de agua
comida y muchos animos!!

Greetings friends.
Before Christmas, we returned to the valley of Botija. This time we wanted to camp near the peak, not only go there for a couple of hours. Florencia drove from Santiago to north of Paposo, more than 1000km, in almost (__) hours (at a fast rate?). On 22 Dec. we were camping among the Copiapoa cinerea ssp. haseltoniana. The following morning, we arrived in Botija and prepared our equipment:
1 tent
1 sleeping bag
1.5l water
food and a lot of spirit/hope

llegamos al "peak" a las 16:30 después de 3 horas de caminata. decidimos acampar junto a la planta mas grande, para apreciarla en todo momento. comimos y descansamos.
luego salimos a pasear hacia una gran montaña que se ve hacia el oriente, en las laderas crecen Copiapoa solaris de gran tamaño, hay pocas plantas muertas, muchas tienen flores y frutos. También hay Copiapoa calderana ssp. atacamensis y Copiapoa sp. aff. paposoensis (according to Rudolf Schulz). Tambien hay Eulychnia iquiquensis Eriosyce paucicostata ssp. floccosa (sin mucha lanosidad, cuerpos muy espinudos, de dificil identificación).
Estuvimos caminando por horas sin tantos animos de llegar a la cima cuando notamos que desde el sur (valle de Iscuña) se estaban acumulando muchas nubes ("la camanchaca").

We arrived at the peak at 16:30 after 3 h. walking. We decided to camp near the largest plant, to be able to see it and marvel at it the whole time. We ate and rested.

Later, we left to go to a big montain that we could see to the east, on whose slopes we believed were some very large C. solaris. We saw a few dead plants, many with flowers and fruit. There were also Copiapoa calderana ssp. atacamensis and Copiapoa sp. aff. paposoensis (according to Rudolf Schulz). There are also Eulychnia iquiquensis, Eriosyce paucicostata ssp. floccosa (without much wool, very spiny bodies, very difficult to ID).
We walked for hours without much hope of reaching the summit when we noticed an accumulation of clouds to the south of us (the valley of Iscuña).


Nos devolvimos al "campamento" y pudimos apreciar como las nubes penetran desde el océano hacia el interior, entrando por la quebrada de Iscuña y luego "subiendo" hasta llegar al "peak" de la quebrada Botija.

La temperatura bajó y comenzó un intenso viento, de suroeste a noreste. El cansancio nos hizo dormir temprano. Atardeció a las 20:00 horas, a las 21:00 estaba completamente oscuro y cubierto por la niebla.
A las 02:00 de la madrugada nos despertaron unos ruidos de guanacos. aprovechamos de salir y dimos una vuelta alrededor de la planta. El lado sur de las plantas es el mas húmedo, cubierto por líquenes y atrapa más humedad en pequeñas gotitas.
A la mañana del 24 de diciembre el sol salió a las 8:30 y nos despertamos. Aún habían nubes cubriendo el campamento y se condensaban muchas gotas sobre la carpa, nuestras ropas y también las plantas. A las 9:00 ya se habían retirado todas las nubes y el sol comenzaba a quemarnos.

We returned to our campsite and were able to see how the clouds penetrated from the ocean to the interior, using the opening in the valley of Iscuña, then climbing until arriving at the peak of the Botija opening.

The temperature dropped and a strong wind commenced, blowing from the southwest towards the northeast. We were tired and went to bed early. By 9pm the sky was very black and completely clouded over.

At 2am we awoke to the sound of guanacos. We decided to leave and made a visit to the plant (that was near the campsite). The south side of the plant is the moister side, covered with lichens, and it captures the humidity in tiny droplets.
On the morning of the Dec. 24th, the sun went in about 8:30 and we got up. The clouds still covered the campsite and the fog wet the tent, our clothes and also the plants. By 9:00, the clouds were gone and the sun started to bake us.

Después de un intenso desayuno decidimos ir hacia las montañas del oriente. Al parecer es el inicio de la quebrada Iscuña. Antiguamente el agua fluyó por esas quebradas; pero es increíble la áridez que hay por estos días!
Encontramos muchas Copiapoa solaris cristatas, en total= 7 cristatas.
El sol nos quemaba la piel y no teníamos mucha agua.

¡sólo 1 fruto de Copiapoa sp. aff. paposoensis! de cientos de plantas que observamos sólo 1 tenia un fruto seco, de temporadas pasadas. Al parecer estas plantas no han florecido ni en 2007 ni el año anterior.

After a big breakfast we decided to go towards the eastern mountains. We seem to be at the mouth of the Iscuña valley. A long time ago the water flowed in these low areas, now the aridity is incredible. We saw a lot of cristate Copiapoa solaris, 7 in all. The sun bakes our skin and we don't have much water.

Only one fruit on a Copiapoa sp. aff. paposoensis! Of the hundreds of plants that we saw, only one had a dried fruit, in the season of dried fruit. It seems these plants had not bloomed in 2007 or in the year before.

Decidimos volver al campamento 01 a las 6 de la tarde, confiados en hacer el camino 1 hora más rápido que la primera vez. Y lo logramos.
Al día siguiente volvimos a adentrarnos, esta vez hacia las montañas del lado norte, donde hay algunas Copiapoa decorticans.
Pareciera que en la base de los cerros predomina Copiapoa solaris y luego a mayor altura y expuestas mas directo a la niebla, viven las Copiapoa decorticans.
Copiapoa decorticans tambien estaba desarrollando muchas flores; pero no cuajaban muchos frutos. No se aprecian muchos insectos polinizadores y predominan las larvas que dañan los frutos.

We decided to return to our first camp site at 6 in the evening, trusting that we would reach the road an hour quicker than the first time. And we did it.
The following day we returned there, this time to the north side of the mountains where there were some Copiapoas decorticans.
It seems that the base of the mountain has mostly C.solaris and the higher elevations and those places more exposed to the clouds has C. decorticans. The C. decorticans also were without many flowers, but few fruits formed. We did not notice many insect pollinators that make the fruit.


Decidimos volver y viajamos otros 1.000 km de vuelta para pasar navidad con nuestras familias!!!
