- | Euphorbia clavarioides | +
- | known for many years and has a wide | +
- | distribution in South Africa from the area | +
- | formerly known as the Transvaal, down | +
- | through the Free State and Lesotho to | +
- | the Eastern Cape. It was first discovered by Drége | +
- | in the 1830s in the Sneeuwberg Mountains and af- | +
- | ter some years Dr. Galpin reported it from the | +
- | Queenstown area. The species was described by | +
- | Boissier in 1860, the type locality being given as | +
- | Graaff-Reinet Dist., in the Sneeuwberg Mountains | +
- | and the distribution as Cape Province: including | +

- | The most striking feature of E. clavarioides | +
- | that it forms large, rounded cushions composed | +
- | of many small heads. The main stem of the plant | +
- | is a continuation of the main root and is com- | +
- | pletely buried underground, | +
- | are produced they appear just above ground lev- | +
- | el at first. However, when these branches mature | +
- | they are drawn down below soil level, rebranch- | +
- | ing in the process, the new branches being just | +
- | above soil level. In turn the secondary branches | +
- | mature and are drawn down, new branches hav- | +
- | ing been produced just above soil level. This | +
- | process continues so that in time, the cushions | +
- | of masses of small heads are produced, the individual heads being rounded and about 1 cm in | +
- | diameter. With age the cushions can be com- | +
- | posed of hundreds of small heads and mounds of | +
- | 1 m or more in diameter have been noted, par- | +
- | ticularly in Lesotho, where the plants are very | +
- | prolific, especially in the mountainous areas | +

- | type of plant was described by N. E. Brown as | +
- | coming from the Transvaal, but in this case the | +
- | cushions of heads were rather flatter and the | +
- | plants branched differently. The main stem was a | +
- | continuation of the root as in | +
- | and was buried almost below ground level, but | +
- | the branches | + | |

- | other branches gradually decreased towards the | +
- | centre of the plant. The tips of the branches | +
- | this euphorbia were inclined to be club shaped | +
- | and N. E. Brown gave it the name | +
- | truncata.\\ | + | |

- | plants of this species suffer from attack by fun- | +

- | During our travels we have found an interesting
- | colony of E. clavarioides var. clavarioides in
- | the Richmond area, where all the plants have
- | exceptionally small heads of only 0.5 cm diam-
- | eter. Some plants are growing on rocky ground
- | and between rocks, but others are not, yet all
- | have similar sized heads. We have been observ-
- | ing these plants over a period of about seven
- | years and although they are increasing in size
- | overall, the individual heads remain small. The
- | habitat is at quite a high altitude and it is ac-
- | cepted that plants of this species prefer this and
- | grow larger than plants which grow at lower al-
- | titudes, therefore it does not seem likely that
- | this would cause the heads to be so small. The area is perhaps on the western edge of the dis-
- | tribution of the species, but again, this would
- | not be a reason for the plants to have such
- | small heads. We hope to continue our visits to
- | the area and observe the progress of these
- | plants.\\ | ||
