In 1991, one year after the discovery of an unfrequent Monvillea by Marcel Kroenlein 1), Frédéric Pillot, decided to devote his master of natural science dissertation to cacti. The author thus pays tribute both to the discoverer and to the plants, which he is appreciating for some years. He describes how the plants have adapted to the dry environments, desert, savanah, plains and mountains of North and South America. After a short survey of the ornemental culture, he gives an overview of the various “pratical” use of these plants.
