Hooker, Joseph Dalton
1817 - 1911
Joseph Dalton Hooker nait le 30 juin 1817 à Halesworth en Angleterre.
Tout petit, il s'intéresse à l'herbier de son père le botaniste William Jackson Hooker et assiste à ses conférences à l'université de Glasgow.
Il suit des études de médecine et de droit puis ses diplômes obtenus, s'embarque en 1839 comme assistant chirurgien sur l'Erebus pour une expédition vers l'Antarctique.
Il collecte des plantes à chaque escale de ce long périple qui le mènera de Madère à Terre Neuve, en passant par Tenerife, le Cap Vert, le Cap de Bonne Espérance, les îles Auckland, la Nouvelle Zélande, etc.
A son retour en 1846, il décide de se consacrer entièrement à la botanique et occupe brièvement une chaire à la Geological Survey of Great Britain. Quelques années plus tard, il est nommé sous-directeur de Kew Gardens puis directeur, à la mort de son père, à qui il succède en 1865.
Durant sa carrière, John Dalton décrit quantité de nouvelles espèces, publie ou collabore à d'importants ouvrages sur la flore locale ou exotique et mène plusieurs missions scientifiques.
- De 1847 à 1850 au Nord de l'Inde et à l'Est du Népal.
- En 1860 en Palestine et en Syrie.
- En 1871 au Maroc.
- En 1877 à l'Ouest des Etats-Unis.
Ces différentes explorations, au cours desquelles il peut étudier et comparer les flores entre elles, l'amènent à élaborer des théories qui fonderont les principes de la géographie botanique (ou biogéographie) et à défendre et soutenir celles de son ami Darwin. Ses découvertes capitales pour l'évolution des connaissances, lui vaudront de nombreux hommages et une trentaine de plantes seront baptisées de son nom.
John Dalton prend sa retraite de Kew Gardens en 1885 et meurt à l'âge de 94 ans, le 10 décembre 1911. Il est inhumé aux côtés de son père dans le cimetière de l'église Sainte Anne de Kew. On peut voir dans cette église, une plaque commémorative décorée de plantes, œuvre de sa cousine Mathilda Smith (1854 - 1926), illustratrice botanique et deuxième femme élue sociétaire de la Société Linnéenne.
Il est à noter que John Dalton, botaniste et fils de botaniste, épouse en premières noces, Harriet, fille du botaniste John Stevens Henslow. De cette union naissent plusieurs enfants dont Harriet Anne, née en 1854 tout comme la cousine Mathilda et qui deviendra comme elle illustratrice botanique. Elle épousera le botaniste William Turner Thiselton-Dyer.
