Type : J.A. Shafer 90, Argentine, Jujuy, Dept Tumbaya, entre Purmamaria (selon le protologue, mais en fait plutôt Purmamarca) et Tumbaya, entre des rochers, 6 février 1917, déposé dans le U.S. National Herbarium du Smithsonian Institution de Washington (U.S.A.) (US 764786 : holotype), ainsi qu'au New-York Botanical Garden, au Missouri Botanical Garden de St Louis (U.S.A.) et aux jardins botaniques royaux de Kew (G.B.) (NY, MO, K : isotypes).
"36. Opuntia shaferi sp. nov.
Plants in clusters of 2 to 4, erect, about 3 dm. high; joints terete, 2.5 to 3.5 cm. in diameter, elongated, very spiny; tubercles low, often indistinct; leaves deciduous, 6 mm. long; areoles 1 cm. apart or less, circular, white-felted; glochids numerous, whitish from the upper margin of the areole; spines about 6 at an areole, brownish, acicular, often 4 to 5 cm. long and associated with long white hairs; flowers not known; fruit globular, about 2 cm. in diameter, bearing numerous large areoles, the areoles white-felted, with glochids and hairs, but no spines; seeds turgid, pointed at base, 4 mm. long.
Collected by J. A. Shafer among stones between Purmamaria and Tumbaya, Argentina, February 6, 1917 (No. 90).
Nearest O. vestita but less cespitose, taller and larger, and with fertile fruit."

Étymologie
Opuntia : Du nom d'une plante citée par Théophraste (vers 371-288 av. J.C.) dans son Histoire des plantes, repris par Pline l'ancien (23-79) dans son Histoire Naturelle, plante qui poussait près de la ville d'Oponte dans la Grèce antique, et qui se reproduisait par feuille.shaferi : en l'honneur du botaniste et collecteur de plantes états-unien John Adolph Shafer (1863-1918).
