On 28 February, Dag wrote "about learning english, there are more mandarin chinese speakers". Does anybody know how many Mandarin speakers there are? I have Mandarin speaking acquaintances who use English when in Hong Kong, for example, because most people there speak Cantonese and cannot speak Mandarin. The same happens in other areas of China. French and Spanish are much closer linguistically than are Cantonese and Mandarin. The same can be said of the other "Chinese" languages spoken in China.

C'est hors sujet but that's life - many interesting paths to follow.

"Mandarin is the most widely spoken of all Chinese languages/dialects and is used by upwards of 720 million people in China, or 70 percent of the population of China (Grimes 1992)."
